Oh No! Why Is My Car Overheating?

There are a number of conditions in which a vehicle, especially an older one, can overheat. It could be a leak in the cooling system, an issue with the radiator, or a handful of mechanical issues. Modern vehicles are built to operate at a pretty specific temperature range – with most sitting somewhere between 195 and 200 degrees Fahrenheit when functioning properly.

If you’re driving and you notice the temperature gauge is reading abnormally high – pull over where it’s safe and shut off the engine. Driving a vehicle that is mid-overheat can put you in danger – and at the very least will cause a whole list of issues that can often be expensive to repair. Why Do Cars Overheat?

While maybe not as scary as some other vehicle malfunctions on Ridgeland roads, an overheated vehicle can cause big problems for the still-functioning components of your vehicle and its drivetrain. So what causes a car to overheat? For your reference, we’ve put together these possibilities: 

  • There could be a leak in the cooling system, causing insufficient levels of coolant to reach key components that can overheat without the coolant passing through.
  • If the wrong coolant was put in your car, or you have a bad coolant-to-water ratio (50/50 is proper), your engine may be prone to overheating. 
  • There could be a blockage in the coolant lines, which would cause similar problems to a low coolant level – the liquid simply won’t reach the necessary components.
  • There’s an issue with the radiator – Radiator issues are another common reason a car would overheat.
  • Your car’s water pump is broken – The water pump sends engine coolant throughout the cooling system. If it suffers a leak or other malfunction, your vehicle will often overheat.
